Beach House (Hawkes Bay) 2014 Cabernet FrancReview written for Beach House (Hawkes Bay) Cabernet Franc
(15/01/13)
Beach House Cabernet Franc 2009 from The Track Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke’s Bay. A dark and nearly opaque cherry red with a magenta rim, shiny and clear, and an oily-looking medium-high viscosity. The nose was scented with irises and plum fruit; gaining milk chocolate, vanillin oak, and green tobacco leaf--not dried. The palate was very concentrated and liquorice-like with again plum and tobacco leaf as well as bitter espresso notes. A powerful, intense wine but lacking the typical Cabernet Franc varietal fragrance and litheness on the palate; instead blocky, impenetrable, and seemingly overdone. Later gaining hints of iodine and iron while the fresh, clean finish lingered medium-long; slowly tapering but with a return of the bitter coffee bean oak character. Whereas the 2007 vintage of this wine was subtly oaked this one seemed heavy-handed and over-enthusiastic, obscuring the otherwise quality fruit. A poor match with corned beef, salad, and new potatoes, but it improved on the second day. This was largely due to the better food match of stuffed courgettes including bacon, cheese, and dried tomato, where the oil and salt in the food provided the wine with a better foil. Probably an even better match: a steak complete with a charred, partially-caramelised exterior. This wine will keep for many years but I’m uncertain whether it will improve with cellaring--the oak may simply continue to dominate.

Altimus 2011 by Michel Torino (Argentina)Review written for Michel Torinos Altimus
(11/02/12)
Michel Torino Estate Altimus 2008, a blend of 52% Malbec, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Syrah, and 6% Bonarda, grown at 1700m in the Cafayate Valley, Salta, in Argentina, with all bar the Syrah component from vineyards planted in the 1940s-50s. 14.5% alcohol. An opaque purple-black colour with a vibrant magenta rim, shiny, and medium-high viscosity. Sweetly scented, floral and plum with touches of glacé fruit. It also smelt of tar and leather and the barest hint of cedar despite spending 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques. A very concentrated, powerful yet harmonious palate with lovely freshness and finesse from its high altitude origins. Once again tarry like the nose with firm fruit-tannins providing structure but also more juicy fruit including blueberries on the very long, even finish. Another person suggested "elderberries, more intense than blackberries". A wonderful, complete wine that matched well with rump steak served with a plum fruit-based port de-glaze, yet also delicious even on its own. Very impressive.

Don David (Argentina) 2015 Reserve TannatReview written for Don David (Argentina) Reserve Tannat
(12/09/11)
Michel Torino Don David Tannat Reserve 2008 An opaque purple-black with a brighter, narrow purple rim, and shiny. A sweetly floral nose, blackberry and faintly volatile with hints of sultana and tutti fruity. A concentrated palate with coal-dust, powdery tannins. A big, mouth-filling wine with blackberry bush and tarry notes, powerful but not closed, and a long finish showing refreshing blackberry acidity and coolness presumably due to its high-altitude origins. This acidity helped cut the weight and power of the wine, preventing it from becoming over-heavy, keeping the fruit from straying into the jammy spectrum and leaving the finish clean, with no alcoholic heat. Later the wine gained faint cedary notes from the oak. A delightful wine.

Review written for Cuma (Argentina) Organic Torrontes (Product not available at this time)
(19/02/12)
Michel Torino Estate Cuma Torrontés 2011, from the Cafayate Valley in Salta, Argentina. 13.5% alcohol. A pale straw-green colour, shiny and clear with a colourless rim and medium-low viscosity. Scented orange flower water and grapey with mixed-spice. A dry palate with more green table grapes, Fuji apple, and touches of white pepper. At times the orange blossom tended towards orange zest. Aromatically reminiscent of an Italian Moscato but dry and rounded with greater weight than any Moscato. The finish was dry, clean, and medium-long. A distinctive wine.
