Whitehaven (Marlborough) 2016 Sauvignon BlancReview written for Whitehaven (Marlborough) Sauvignon Blanc
(16/01/14)
Firstly. I am not a fan of Sauvignon Blanc so I shared this with some friends who are and they liked it. The nose is quite grassy (more silage than freshly mown) but not unpleasant. The palate is packed with gooseberry and a little stone fruit. The finish is a bit short and it lacks that acidity which is what I usually dislike in a Sauvignon Blanc so for me that was a positive but I'm not sure SB fans would feel the same. I would rate it 3/5 but the others said 4.

Whitehaven (Marlborough) 2015 ChardonnayReview written for Whitehaven (Marlborough) Chardonnay

I really liked the nose on this Chard, a hint of toasty oak but mainly peaches and apricots. Subtle but very pleasant. The palate is elegant with a delightful creamy finish with hints of peach. Mouth watering acidity makes this an excellent match for a creamy brie.

Michel Torino (Argentina) 2016 ShirazReview written for Michel Torino (Argentina) Shiraz
(05/12/13)
This is great value. It is the 3rd wine by Michel Torino I have tried and by far my favourite. Lovely earthy blackberry nose. It reminds me of the dusty blackberry smell of late summer fruit picking. The palate is rich and rounded with more blackberry and velvety chocolate followed by a spicy liquorice finish. It's a pretty big wine and overpowered my mushroom ravioli and would better suit Lamb, duck or venison.

Michel Torino (Argentina) 2016 Cabernet SauvignonReview written for Michel Torino (Argentina) Cabernet Sauvignon
(02/12/13)
Having been a little 'underwhelmed' by the chardonnay by Michel Torino I wasn't sure what to expect of his Cabernet Sauvignon. I was very pleasantly surprised. Lovely spice and fruit on the nose followed by a gutsy hit of cherry on the palate with trace of cranberry. It finishes well with some nice savoury notes of pepper with a hint of smoke. I really enjoyed this and for the price it is one I will definitely be reordering. This would be perfect for the BBQ season.

Barren Rock (Central Otago) 2016 Pinot NoirReview written for Barren Rock (Central Otago) Pinot Noir
(19/11/13)
This is great value for money and very easy drinking. Soft cherry on the palate with hints of anise on the finish. We enjoyed a bottle of this with friends over an Italian pork dish and it worked brilliantly with the fennel and tomato flavours. To enjoy this wine at its best give it plenty of time to breath and don't serve it too cold.

Absolutely loved this wine, particularly for the price. Intense and fruity on the nose, full and rounded with the perfect balance ripe berry on the front and mid palate and spice and savoury pepper on the finish.

I really liked this soft approachable pinot noir. Fairly light in colour and weight it still delivered on flavour. The palate is predominantly berry in character but there are other more herbaceous and earthy characteristics which kept it interesting. I enjoyed it with a pork dish which worked fine but the perfect match would be Italian food preferably something meaty or earthy.

Stunning. Deep intense colour. Plum and vanilla on the nose followed by a cherries, plums and spice on the palate and a beautiful lingering finish. Fabulous with lamb, duck or venison.

Lovely straw colour with a hint of apple green. I was initially disappointed with the nose but once it had warmed up a little it had a lovely bitter almond and floral bouquet. Silky in the mouth with a lovely rounded texture. Very subtle under-ripe peach flavours on the palate followed by a burst of juicy grapefruit acidity and a lingering pear and almond finish.

I found this very disappointing. So much so that I didn't finish the glass. The deep colour is unusual and hinted at far more depth of flavour which it did not deliver. Nothing on the nose and only a vague taste of raspberry on the palette.

Tutto bene, when you find a good Italian wine they are hard to beat and this one is lovely. Plump plum and heady cherry flavours dominate. Big and bold with a lovely spicy finish. Great with salami or blue cheese or a nice char-grilled steak.

Archery (Gisborne) Chardonnay 2013Review written for Archery (Gisborne) Chardonnay (Product not available at this time)
(04/12/13)
This chardonnay has a delightful nose, toasty and with floral hints. The weight is lovely with pear and peach fruit dominant on the palate and a crisp lime finish. To get the best from this wine don't drink it straight from the fridge. I found it was great at about 12 degrees C. I enjoyed it with pumpkin ravioli with burnt butter and sage which was great but any non-tomato based pasta dish would work.

Straight 8 Estate (Canterbury) Riesling 2012Review written for Straight Eight Estate Riesling (Product not available at this time)

Wow, this is fabulous for twice the price. The nose is intensely floral with delightful hints of orange blossom. The palate is equally intense with gorgeous honey and melon sweetness balanced by a burst of juicy lime on the finish. This would be great with Asian food but is so refreshing and delicious (and low in alcohol)that you could just enjoy it on its own.

Not a bad drop for the price. The nose is predominately pear with a hint of burnt sugar and a faint vanilla sweetness. It has nice mouthfeel with more pear and peach notes on the palate. The finish is pretty acidic and predominantly grapefruit and peach stone in character although green apple peel comes through right at the very end. The acidity is very dominant when chilled so I would recommend serving it nearer to room temp. Great with pan fried fish, buttery sauces or soft cheese.

This is wonderful value. Lovely fruit on the nose and then this intense and lingering cherry on the palate. Beautifully smooth and round with enough length and character to keep you interested. I will definitely be buying more of this one.

A nice example of a Merlot. With a husband who doesn't enjoy the tannic characteristics of other red varietals it was a good choice for both of us. Good depth of character with rich plummy notes, silky texture and a nice exotic spice finish. I recommend decanting or using a vinturi to enjoy this at it's best. We enjoyed this with a spice rubbed lamb dish but would also work well with duck or tomato based dishes.

What a bargain! Soft, fruity and well rounded. A classic Merlot with lovley berry aromas and cherry and bramble on the palate. With so much fruit and minimal tannis, this is the perfect wine to convert non-red wine drinkers to the dark side!

Review written for Yalumba Y Series (South Australia) Shiraz Viognier (Product not available at this time)

A really interesting and intense blend. Heaps of fruit both on the nose and palate. Predominantly blackberry and vanilla with toffee and a little spice on the finish. A little less savoury than my preference but would work well with duck, game or dried fruits and blue cheeses.

What a joy to find this wine which is a perfect halfway house between the vibrant crisp italian style grigio and the luscious alsatian pinot gris. Lovely fruit with balance and acidity, fabulous with fish or seafood or on its own served chilled. Great summer drinking.

Rounded melon and sweet vanilla with a crisp citric finish andy hints of liquorice. Whilst not top drawer this is a characterful Chardonnay they delivers well above it's pri cetag.

I struggled to decide whether I should give this a 3 or a 4 rating. Without food this is probably a 3 as it's failings are more obvious but enjoyed with gutsy Italian food I would give it a 4. Heaps of spice and earthy fruit flavours this wine is bold and with enough body to compliment intense Italian flavours. Excellent Value and a great table wine if served at room temp.

Fantastic value. This wine is packed with much more flavour than the bouquet would suggest. Lovely crisp apple and citrus tones with mouth-watering acidity. Clean, off-dry and refreshing. Perfect with fish, (sashimi in particular) or any soft cheese.

Whilst I enjoyed the Benjamin Tempranillo more, this was still a fabulous wine for the money. To get the best from it I would recommend decanting or using a vinturi or similar.

This is the only wine I have purchased for winesale and been disappointed with. I have enjoyed some superb wines from Black Ridge before and was excited to try this blended white from them. The first bottle I opened of this was undrinkable (off) so I opened a second to see if that one was also spoilt. It wasn't, but the balance of the wine did not suit me at all. So acidic very little fruit on the nose or palate reminded me of cheap french table wine and I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
