(15/08/14)
I am not usually a Chardonnay drinker but found this one very likeable. It had a strong flavour and nose and the after taste lingered well after the initial sip. It went well with my blue cod meal that the wife fixed for me. Try it with fish. Cheers Harry Jewiss

When in the USA or Canada we look for NZ wines as their local wines do not seem to have the bight in flavour that ours have. They have not mastered the art of flavouring their wine to be tasted at the back of the tongue as well as the front and the nose of their wines is less compelling.

This wine was a surprise. First I took the cork and tried it. It was very earthy so I poured the wine through my aerater and wow it was magnificient ripe berry fruit tastes with a very strong back of the tongue support. Conclusion: Let this wine breath before drinking and it is every bit as marvelous as they claim.

It may have taken Central Otago some years to get into the wine business but these wonderful Pinot style wines that are coming out of there are wonderful. Like mother milk to a babe.

This wine grabs you by the nose and says drink me. It is fruity in flavour and delivers in taste what it promises through the nose. It leaves a fresh fruit taste in the mouth so is palatable to the back of the tongue.

The wine is excellent but the name is a miss representation of it. Hop indicates beer which in Maori is called Wai Piro (smelly water). I found its nose pleasant and taste was good. Please rethink this misleading name. Cheers Harry Jewiss

This one was a bit weak in flavour and I could not rate it anywhere but below New Zealand Pinot Gris. Aussie should stick to what they are good at and that is Shiraz for reds and Semillon for whites and leave the exotics to the country with many micro climates to give different varieties. Wow the Nelson region is coming out with some tasty wines and this is one of them. It has all of the desired characters of a good Savy together with a strong flavour and after taste. I look forward to trying some other Nelson wines after my introduction through this one. Harry Jewiss

I always look for Warburn when selecting a Shiraz as theirs is always consistent. It has a beautiful deep colour and strong nose together with a full mouth flavour. I serve this to guests who like red wines and they love it particularly the Americans as theirreds tend to be a bit insipid compared to this full flavoured wine.

Look out Central Otago, Wairarapa seem to have caught onto how to produce a fruitful Pinot Noir. This one is exceptional and has a taste that makes one imagine they have a mouth full of berry fruit juice. Well perhaps a little sharper in flavour than actual juice and a nose that says drink me.

How do they do it. I recently had a trip round the South Island and my trip through Central Otago was rewarded with some mouth watering Pinot Noir's. This one had a definate taste of the berry fruit and sustained its presence in the mouth well after each sip. A great reward to give yourself when drunk with your evening meal as I do. Like all reds this wine tastes better when allowed to breath before drinking.

I can recall when visiting this vinyard some years ago how wonderful their Pinot Noir was. They were selling London for $150 a bottle and they had one at the door selling for $75. I could not afford that for one bottle of wine but as I had purchased 12 bottles and they offered a 13th bottle free if you bought 12 bottles I selected the $75 one. After some discussion between the manager and counter sales person they conceded to give me the bottle and then changed the gift idea. There wines were and still are some of the best I have ever tasted.

I had a glass of this with my dinner last night and was delightfully surprised on the strength of flavour. It certainly delivers to the mouth what it promises through the nose. I have drunk reds in Italy and found them insipid as well as those French ones I drank in Canada. I can see this standard selling well overseas as it is well above what they seem to sell there. But, please do not export it all. Leave some for me.

I enjoyed this one as it had a great taste and that even improved when the wine was poured through my "wine aerater" these things are great. I bought mine in Australia but have not seen them for sale here in NZ. The one I bought was $14 Australian in South West Rocks NSW and is one of the best investments I have had. Why don't wine sales sell them. I would buy some as gifts.

I have visited there(Margaret River vinyards) and as I found then it needs more work on it as it has a bitterness to the taste. This could be because of the water situation as the growers must provide their own irrigation water and do so from little lakes on their own property. It gets very dry during the summer months. Harry

This would have to rate up there with the best of Aussie reds. It has a nose that says try me and the taste gives a berry fruit burst in the mouth. It has a good lingering after taste and fortunately does not have those tannins that pull your mouth in. If you want tannins you would drink strong black tea. Yuck!
