Four 1/2 Stars - Joelle Thomson
"Deliciously great value from ‘the California of Tuscany’ aka the warm coastal wine region of Maremma. This is made from the Sangiovese grape; famous in Chianti and offering drop dead gorgeous bright fruit flavours with a savoury twist here" Joelle Thomson

Sangiovese is "the" grape of Italy. So many great wines have been made using this hardy variety. From Chianti to the new wave of "super Tuscan" blends. This wine could easily be labeled a "baby super Tuscan".

The influence of the nearby sea and a uniquely Mediterranean climate make Maremma an area that brings out the very best in the intrinsic qualities of Sangiovese, the signature variety of Tuscan winemaking. Tasting is believing!

Bright ruby red; characteristically varietal aromatics of cherries, forest fruits and spices, lifted by subtle aromatic herbs; assertively full entry, intense yet elegant structure and extract finishing attractively long with a reprise of the fragrant fruitiness and balsamic notes.

Food matchings: Perfect with grilled red meats, cured cold cuts and traditional Tuscan ewe’s milk cheese

Ah, the new vintage Sassoregale. Yes, it has a screwcap. Yes, it is still a great wine. Purple/red in color, with chocolate/caramel (along with plums and cherries) on the nose. Good tannic structure and excellent balance. This vintage is not as "fruit-forward" as the 2007 - that's probably the biggest difference here. Overall still a great wine. Serve with grilled meats or pasta and enjoy! Addendum: if you're going to have a bottle of wine shatter during an earthquake, this is an excellent choice - the fragrance of cedar and spice was quite lovely as far as spilled wine goes. Can't say much in favor of the stain on the carpet, though....

Great looking bottle and an enjoyable wine. Nice Chocolate and Cherry flavours which would match well with lamb. I found this quite a light wine and not as gutsy as expected but still enjoyable none the less. 80/100 IMHO

Great label, the Italians do fantastic Gothic style. It looks great on a winter table with candles and an open fire This red goes fantastic with anything Paprika and tomato. I love it with Choritzo. In Wellington there is a guy who makes great sausage under the name Little Wolf. Try it with this wine (the wolf on the label will help you remember). It's a match to make you cry with happiness.

Maybe its just me but I really didn't really like this wine. Watery and bland, flat aftertaste. Wouldn't buy it again. 2 stars - just

I have listed this as "Fantastic", and have raved to my friends about it (Those who haven't drunk it with me). Those who have drunk it, agree. I do make sure it is at a good temp to serve, really brings it up that extra 1/2 star that Joelle didn't give it. I will be purchasing more.

Not as heavy as I imagined it would be but once I was over that disappointment I enjoyed it. Shouldn't judge by the bottle but it is Such an elegant label.

5 out of 5 customers rated this wine as good value for money.

"A nicely maturing red, the lifted bouquet shows complex aromas of dark berry, smoked meat, clove and dried herbs. It is ripe and rounded on the palate, and delivers attractive fruit intensity and silky texture. Harmonious and elegant, and very friendly. At its best: now to 2017." A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Supple and well balanced showing plum, red berries and hints of leather. Well integrated spicy oak is supported by fine tannins and firm structure. Match with red meats and game, pasta, cheese or full flavoured dishes.

Our famous 5 Star Central Otago Pinot Noir. This quality of Pinot Noir at this price has been unheard until now. Bramble, spice, doris plum and rich ripe red fruit aromatics. A delicious fruit driven style having a rounded palate of cherry flavours with a hint of chocolate and spice. Followed by a mineral, elegant palate showing great density, tension and persistence. Ideal on its own or matched with lamb or strong flavoured fish.
