5 Stars & 94 Points -  Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Konrad Hengstler began planting vines in Marlborough in 1996, it didn’t take him long to shake hands with the Giesen brothers. Their shared commitment to quality shaped their partnerships across decades, ultimately leading Konrad to pass the baton on his retirement. The Giesen brothers continue Konrad Wines’ legacy, distributing quality wines around the world.

This organically grown single vineyard Grüner Veltliner was grown on a 2 cane trellis with mix of first crop and mature vines. The 2018 growing season was one of the warmest on record after 2016 so provided us with close to ideal conditions in which to grow this fine Austrian native. Gruner has large bunches needing strict vineyard management to ripen evenly, keeping the acidity down and the flavours intense

Ripe peach, melon, grapefruit and a delicious lemon zest note. Underneath these primary aromatics are more subtle mineral notes of talc and flint as well as the elusive white pepper character. The palate is soft and full bodied showing those stone & citrus fruits fulling the mid palate. The acidity is crisp but yielding ensuring the wine stays balanced with a trace of natural fruit sweetness through to a fine, clean, dry finish.

This 2018 Grüner Veltliner drinks beautifully while young but will happily develop lovely secondary characters in bottle after 5 or so years.

Perfect summer sipping!
