If you are buying Merlot in New Zealand you are probably buying it from Hawkes Bay.

The Matakana Estate has vineyards in  Hawkes Bay, Marlborough and its home vineyards in Matakana.

The Hawkes Bay grapes come from the stony terraces, gravel beds and free-draining alluvial soils on the plains between Havelock and Napier, particularly the renowned Gimblett Gravels/Bridge Pa area.

The winemaker, Richard Robson is an Aussie winemaker with a decent career working for Charles Melton, Yalumba, Plantagenet and also spent some time working in the Rhone valley.

The MAAB Merlot shows rich aromas of blackcurrant, plums and mocha. Soft and savoury on the palate showing plum jam, black cherry and earthy spice.
