95 Points & 5 Stars - Bob Campbell MW Gourmet Traveller Wine
"A blend of cabernet sauvignon 54%, merlot 34% and cabernet franc 12%. Elegant wine with blackcurrants, rose petals, fresh herbs, cedar wood and spicy oak (among others). Inevitably, Awatea will be compared to its big brother Coleraine. It stands up well particularly when price is factored in."

"Without question, the best Awatea ever made. It’s immediately inviting on the nose showing blackcurrant, sweet plum, subtle tobacco, floral and cedar aromas, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate displaying terrific fruit power and density. It’s sturdy and robust with silky texture and loads of cocoa tannins. A blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot12% cabernet franc. Exceptional value. Best: 2024 to 2036."

"Offering top value, this deeply coloured, highly fragrant red is mouthfilling, with concentrated ripe flavours of blackcurannts, plums, herbs and spices, finely integrated oak, and a tighly structured, persistent finish."

First made in 1982, Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawke's Bay cabernet/merlot blend. Floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with a sustained finish. Awatea will continue to evolve in bottle for ten years from harvest.

Separate parcels of grapes were destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for ageing. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in January, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then egg white fined and bottled in November 2021. The final blend is 54% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot and 12% cabernet franc.

Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’20 is a dark royal ruby; a bright purple glow at its edge. Immediate classical aromas of walnut and polished cedar shimmer amongst wild blackberry, currants, marzipan, and dusty sun-baked gravel. On the palate, sparkling red and black summer-fruits entwine with brilliant red roses, high notes of vanilla, and silky dark-chocolate tannin. Savoury, bright, sustained and sumptuous, Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’20 simply shines.

Best enjoyed from a large glass, with a hard cheese, and good company.
