94/100 (Excellent) – Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

A distinguished expression of Central Otago, this 2022 Reserve Pinot Noir strikes a masterful balance between approachability and serious complexity. The nose is highly aromatic, leaping from the glass with intense dark cherry, wild blueberry, and ripe plum, underpinned by classic regional nuances of dried herbs, lavender, and a whisper of mineral-earth smoke.

On the palate, the wine is generous and mouth-filling. Layers of succulent boysenberry and blackcurrant are entwined with subtle baking spices and a hint of liquorice. The structure is defined by polished, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant medium-plus acidity that lends the wine remarkable length and a "satin" textural touch. The finish is persistent and savoury, leaving a lingering impression of dark fruit and toasted oak.

The fruit was sourced from low-yielding vines in the heart of Central Otago, following a long, hot summer that allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness. To ensure maximum extraction of color and flavor, the grapes underwent a three-day cold soak before fermentation. During fermentation, the cap was gently plunged to manage tannin extraction, followed by a 10-day post-fermentation skin contact period to build structural depth.

The wine was matured for 12 months in premium French oak barrels, with 35% new wood used to integrate spicy oak notes without overshadowing the fruit. To preserve its natural integrity and texture, the wine remained un-fined, receiving only a cross-flow filtration before being bottled under screwcap.

This Pinot Noir’s savory complexity makes it a perfect companion for earthy and rich flavors. Pair with slow-cooked lamb shoulder with a rosemary jus or seared venison medallions or a creamy mushroom risotto with truffle oil.
