Alpha Domus Collection (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Chardonnay

Made from a combination of different subregions and vineyards carefully selected for quality and flavour. The fruit was harvested and pressed quickly with minimal winemaking intervention to preserve fruit flavour. Once clear juice is racked off, a combination of selected and wild yeast is used for fermentation. Maturation on light yeast lees adds texture and flavour which is balanced by fresh natural acidity from the grapes. Bottled under screw cap to maintain freshness and integrity of the wine through to your glass

Golden hued with a touch of lemon yellow, reflective of the warmer vintage. The bouquet abounds with appealing toasted oak influences, pure scented citrus blossom, and golden peach characters. Embellished with layers of tropical fruit flavours and sweet spice from French oak all wrapped around a smooth textural mid palate with a crisp, lingering finish. Generous and flavoursome, but with balance and grace.

Always a fave with Chardonnay fans and a bargain compared to others!

Winery notes
"Our 2020 Selection Chardonnay is absolutely superb. 100% handpicked. 100% whole bunch pressed and fermented in our finest French oak barrels including 21% new oak. 2020 was an exceptional vintage, with a long hot dry summer. The grapes were immaculately clean. The wine spent 10 months in barrel and was stirred regularly softening the wine and giving it lots of lovely leesy complexity.

The nose is filled with brioche, peach, melon and grapefruit pith with hints of toasted nuts and spice. On the palate the wine is seamless with many different flavours flowing nicely together. All the hallmarks of an ultra-premium Chardonnay are present – the fruit, oak and MLF flavours coalesce together nicely. "

Bogle (California) 2019 Chardonnay 12 Pack

Awarded American Winery of the Year – Wine Enthusiast Magazine 2019

Ever popular Californian Chardonnay – rich, full and buttery

Bogle Winery is a family owned and run winery, which was established in 1968 by father and son team, Warren and Chris Bogle.

Winery notes
"Our Bogle Chardonnay is the epitome of a hand-crafted wine. Harvested by hand and whole cluster pressed, half of the grapes go directly into stainless steel tanks to retain their crisp, fresh nature. The other half of the grapes are fermented in new American oak, where they age on the lees for 8 months, with monthly stirring. The finished wine is blended together just before bottling, resulting in a complex and delightful wine. Green apple and pear aromas classically characterize this wine as Clarksburg, while honeycomb and vanilla heighten the first impression. The rich, round entry rolls into a viscous and silky mouthfeel, surrounded by Asian pears and Honeycrisp apples. The finish lingers long and soft, like the wafting aromas of grandma’s warm apple pie."

The grapes are some of Californias finest, sourced from Clarksburg, and then lovingly barrel fermented to enrich with smooth flavours.

Lush, creamy, generous like its Bogle siblings and lengthy like its history. Green apple and pear transform into spicy flavours of freshly baked apple pie. Barrel fermentation in French Oak imparts layers of vanilla and melted caramel notes which meld into a smooth, rich mouthfeel.

Domaine Rewa (Otago) 2019 Chardonnay

5 Stars 19/20 - Candice Chow Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
"Bright, pale straw-yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is gently full and elegant, penetrating aromas of stonefruit, melon, citrus, along with mineral melded with subtlely well-proportioned custard, raw nuts and spices. Medium-bodied, lush fruit of peach, nectarine and melon fills the palate, lemon sherbet and zest added freshness. Flavours grow in intensity, unfolding refined toasty oak with white spice and a little cream linger to a long, sustained refined finish. The wine is elegant and delicate; crisp acidity thread flows smoothly with chalky phenolic, adorn by a little creaminess and reflecting fruit's purity. This harmonious and sleek Chardonnay with fruit's purity, lacy acidity and a chalky mineral mouthfeel is already delicious. Match with whitebait fritters and soft cheese over the next 5+ years. Handpicked Mendoza and Clone 15 Chardonnay, whole bunch pressed to tank, settled overnight, then transferred to French oak barriques for wild fermentation, 13.5% alc. Aged in oak for 9 months, 36% new oak, MLF occurred, and lees stirred weekly. No fining. 19/20 pts (95 pts) Mar 2021 RRP $55"

Elegant and just divine.

95 Points - Cameron Douglas MS World of Wine

"A bouquet with complexity and intrigue, depth and curiosity. Tense and youthful with flavours of white and yellow tree fruits, a touch of grapefruit, lees, mineral and spice.
Excellent texture with a core of fruit surrounded by oak, fine wood tannins and contrasting acidity. Well made, but does need some time to develop more harmonious transitions.
Well made and likely best drinking mid to late 2022 through 2026+."

A rich and full flavoured Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. Its flavour profile is a mix of peach, grilled nuts, butter, grapefruit with a subtle oak spice. It is both complex and delicious and a classic expression of Hawkes Bay Chardonnay.

Fermented using wild yeast in French oak barriques. Fifty per cent of the wine was allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation which softened the wine and added further complexity. The wine was left on its lees undergoing regular stirring before being blended and bottled in February 2021.

Esk Valley (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Chardonnay

This is a medium bodied and elegant Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. Its flavour profile is a mix of peach, grilled nuts, grapefruit, butter and subtle oak spice. It is both complex and delicious.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards planted in three of Hawkes Bay’s many sub regions. Bay View fruit provides ripe stonefruit characters while our vineyard sites inland on cooler river terraces above the Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro Rivers bring acidity and flinty grapefruit notes. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning are all practised in the pursuit of quality. This wine sees plenty of French oak and undergoes wild fermentation for added complexity and character.

Ideally suited to rich seafood dishes or white meats such as pork or chicken, but equally delicious as an aperitif or with hard cheeses.

Giesen (Marlborough) 2016 Clayvin Chardonnay

5 Stars - Yvonne Lorkin
95/100 - Cameron Douglas MS

Established in 1993, Clayvin Vineyard was Marlborough’s first commercial hillside vineyard. North facing, the vineyard planting is high density with 5,500 vines per hectare, compared with the typical Marlborough planting of 2000 - 2,500 vines per hectare. This density creates natural competition among the vines, reducing vigour, promoting root structure and intensity of flavour.

Selectively hand-picked to ensure the ‘harvest window’ for each sub-block was spot on and the fruit arrived at the winery in optimum condition. PRESSING/ FERMENTATION Whole bunch pressed with the free run juice settled and transferred to oak. Wild yeast starter creating a warm natural fermentation. Fermentation in 1000 litre German Oak ‘Fuder’ barrels, rested on lees for 11 months prior to racking, wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. Matured in oak for 10 months.

Giesen (Marlborough) 2020 The Brothers Chardonnay

Winery notes
"Aromas are bright with white peach, meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut and subtle flint. The palate is rich and concentrated with bright zest balancing the fresh sweetness. Ripe lemon and peach flavours, with grapefruit on the finish.

The wine was fermented then matured in predominately French oak hogsheads and puncheons along with 1000L German oak Fuder barrels for 10 months. Oak age varied from one year old barrels, with the majority three year old(78%). This selection was to ensure the wine had subtle oak character which allowed the fruit to shine. The wine was fined and filtered for bottling."

Matahiwi (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Holly Chardonnay

95 Points - Sam kim - Wine Orbit

Sourced from two great vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, this is a rich barrel fermented Chardonnay in the classic style with the accent on complexity and fruit weight.

Harvested, pressed and the juice run immediately to French Barriques, 30% of which were new. Fermentation occurred in barrel with both wild and cultured yeasts to add complexity. Once fermentation was complete the wine remained in barrel on full lees for a total of 10 months, with regular stirring and topping to promote texture and autolytic complexity. A portion (approximately 50%) of the barrels went through Malolactic fermentation in spring to enhance mouthfeel and buttery characters.

Perfect with seafood, roast chicken or huhu grubs sautéed in garlic butter. Already enjoyable, this wine will continue to improve over the next 3 to 7 years.
