97 Points - Ken Gargett, Tasting Book
94 Points - Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot

From some of the oldest ungrafted Shiraz vines in the world, all of at least 100 years of age.

Winery description
"The wine delivers classical regional characters of dense, spicy blueberry fruit and savoury pan jus. Next come hints of liquorice, plum, and all-spice all delicately interwoven. A fine grained tannin structure and depth of flavour all show that this wine is made to last the distance in the cellar. A long balanced finish with persistence.

From just two small vineyards on the Eastern Edge of Vine Vale (Deep Sandy Loam) and the Nuriootpa (Alluvial Sand over Red Brown Earth) sub-regions of the Barossa. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and spent seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging four times daily to gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. This was followed by careful basket pressing followed 24 months' maturation in our cellars in a combination of French and American oak (20% New). In keeping with the non-interventionist winemaking style we have neither fined nor filtered this wine."

Chateau Tanunda (Barossa) 2019 Ebenezer Shiraz 1.5L MAGNUM

96 POINTS - Huon Hooke, The Real Review (2018 Vintage)
"Deep, dark red/purple colour with a gun-flinty, machine-oil overtone to the bouquet. There are black fruit aromas beneath. The palate is very complex and layered, with smoky, briary, black olive and graphite nuances that follow throughout the palate. The tannins are firm and compact and beautifully balanced to add structure and contribute to length. A ripping wine. Drinking Well: 2020–2035"

Only 240 of these Magnums are produced, Winesale was lucky enough to snaffle some of these big boys!

Marananga, centred in the North West quadrant of the Barossa provides some of the Valley’s most powerful wines. The red brown clay loam soils with schists and siltstone yield flavours of jam and fruitcake, cardamom, blueberry fruits, cocoa powder with an undercurrent of roasted meats and crackling.

WINEMAKING

To ensure the unique character of this sub region is exemplified in the wine, small open fermenters and our basket press were employed to gently extract the wine. Aging in the finest quality oak for 18 months and selection of the truest barrels has created a wine that respects and expresses its place of origin.

Chateau Tanunda (Barossa) 2019 Terroirs Greenock Shiraz

96 POINTS- Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
A tremendously styled shiraz; the bouquet shows dark fruit richness with vanilla, cedar and cake spice characters, followed by a concentrated palate that’s expansive and mouthfilling. It’s splendidly enhanced by silky texture and grainy tannins, offering firm structure and terrific length. At its best: now to 2038.
92 POINTS - Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Deep dark purple/red colour, with a more herbal aromatic note, peppercorns, coconut and green walnut naunces, too. The palate is bold and full-bodied...Age will no doubt bring more to it. Drink 2022 - 2035

An expression of invidivuals regions within the greater Barossa area. Greenock sits on the north western outskirts of Nuriootpa, in the heart of the Barossa Valley.
The dark, brooding regional characters of plum, red cherry and liquorice are all to the fore of this wine. The palate is focused and linear, with dark bitter chocolate notes and an elegant long persistent finish. We recommend cellaring for 10 years.

Commercial description
"The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in the early 1990s. Naturally, now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. The alphanumeric Bin designation 798 was bestowed upon the wine from the 2016 vintage. Stylistically, RWT is contemporary, opulent and finely tuned. An interesting contrast to the well-established Grange, which is a more concentrated, muscular and assertive style. RWT is made from Barossa Valley shiraz grapes primarily selected for their aromatic qualities, varietal typicity, fine tannins and plush texture. Maturation in French oak provides another contrast to Grange. The result is a wine that redefines Barossa Valley shiraz at the highest quality level. While delightfully approachable on release, RWT Bin 798 has the concentration and balance to age for many years.

Penfolds (South Australia) 2019 Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro

Penfolds NZ Allocation is in!!

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
"Sweet, simple, fruit-driven aromatics lead to a bold, open, plush expression of this famous blend. Raspberry, boysenberry, anise and woodsmoke characters have this wine rollicking along in fine, enjoyable style. It will mature well; it pretty much always does. But gosh this is fun right now."

Commercial description
"Bin 2 was first released in 1960, yet was discontinued in Australia in the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. The original Bin 2 was an ‘Australian Burgundy’ style (despite its Rhône varieties) – typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on Shiraz. The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mataro is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Monastrell or Mourvèdre, Mataro was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Sometimes used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley. It is greatly valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip."

A summer-pudding swirl of fruits laced with red-currant conserve, praline. Varietal I.D. confirmed via green Sicilian olive, plummy fruits and spice. Fine tannins, well-concealed oak."

"The fruit profile is a delight, oak playing no role in the aromatics. Shiraz, unadulterated! The descriptors need to be coaxed from the glass with a gentle swirl. Fruits of the forest are first to emerge, berry conserve, strawberry flan and rhubarb tart. There is a hit of confectionary, reminiscent of red glace cherries. Savoury notes include German Blutwurst spiced sausage, pan scrapings from roast lamb and salt cured beef with black peppercorns. Ferric notes of iron filings and whetstone swarf round out an impressive showing. PALATE True to form, the palate is quite savoury. Japanese nori paper and olive brine offer a very morish umami nuance. Fresh blueberry and mulberry leaf anchor the core of the mid-palate. Exotic spices adding intrigue, Alleppey turmeric, toasted cumin, pimento. The tannins are very tactile, comparable to Dutch cocoa. A classic St Henri that will reward extended time in the cellar."

Winery note
"Displaying lively dark cherry aromas overlayed with oak nuances of moccha and vanilla bean. There is a slight brooding ferrous element to the aroma which provides complexity. The rich and generous dark fruit spectrum on the front and mid palate is classic Blackwell. Grapes for Blackwell are sourced from the north-west corner of the Barossa Valley. The grapes are sourced from vineyards surrounding the parishes of Ebenezer, Greenock and Seppeltsfield. Each vineyard destined for Blackwell was vinified separately and had skin contact for between six and eight days. The pump over regime was tailored to the individual vineyard parcel. Post-pressing, the wine spent 24 hours in stainless steel before going to barrel for malo-lactic fermentation. Barrels were matched to each parcel to promote harmony and balance during maturation. American Oak was used with a mixture of one to three year old barrels to ensureseamless integration."

Winery description
"The wine is named Bullnose after an early Morris Cowley car, which was nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem that appears on the wine label is drawn from the car’s radiator crest. Magnificent deep magenta, Bullnose ’21 entices with fl oral fragrance of lavender, violets and a dusting of cardamon and cinnamon developing on the palate into black cherry syrup, boysenberry and Turkish delight. Grace notes of char, truffle and pink peppercorns appear in layer upon layer of velvet tannins that run from front to back in the wine - extending the mid-palate presence into a long, sustained finish of saturated and spiced red berries. Bullnose ’21 is endlessly enchanting from every angle."
