Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2020 Pinot Noir

98 points James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

Winery notes
Looking back at the seasonal notes of the 2020 vintage the repeating theme is `typical’. Temperature, rainfall and yields were all we could hope for in an ideal season in Martinborough.  It was a pleasure to harvest clean, impeccable fruit that had a clear, calm voice of the region and vintage. Made from only our oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is the best of six small vineyards all within 500 m of our winery.  The result is a complex, elegant wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style.

A full fragrant nose of juniper, cranberry and red plum meld with spice and herbal notes of cardamon, pink peppercorn and dried oregano. Bright and supple on entry, with finely coating tannins that extend the full length of the palate. This release exudes confidence and poise and is the perfect touchstone for our single vineyard releases.

Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2022 Crimson Pinot Noir

Winery note
"20 years ago we named this special Pinot Noir “Crimson” in support of Project Crimson, the charitable trust working to replant and preserve native red-flowering pōhutukawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand.

Crimson is our selection of parcels from younger Pinot Noir vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity around 5-25 years.

2021 was a very small yielding vintage resulting in wines with intensity and concentration. The small compact bunches gave a wonderful blend of bright fruit aromas and more dark seductive notes of dark cherry, thyme and mulberry. The palate opens to more savoury notes of soy, tahini and burnt orange, which gives a depth of flavour. Combined with fresh acidity that gives energy and fine tannins that drive a sustaining finish. Only small quantities made, our Crimson 2021 shows the structure and drive of a small vintage in Martinborough."

"For years, Bogle winemakers have sought out vines ranging in age from 60 to 80 years old for our Old Vine Zinfandel. These gnarly head-trained and dry farmed pioneers produce low yields of small, concentrated clusters of fruit, producing incredibly intense and flavourful wines.

Cedar, juniper berry and sweet dried herbs greet the nose of this wine, while focused flavours of dried plums, cranberries and cherries sink into a decadent, plush mouthfeel. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and spent seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging four times daily to gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. This was followed by careful basket pressing followed 24 months' maturation in our cellars in a combination of French and American oak (20% New). In keeping with the non-interventionist winemaking style we have neither fined nor filtered this wine."
