Domaines des Lauriers (France) 2020 Picpoul de Pinet

How about something different?! Picpol de Pinet is taking the UK by storm and is fast becoming a great pick for summer drinking.

Classic Picpoul in name and style!  This comes from a site with red, calcareous, gravelly soil.  Pale lemon/green in colour, there is a mouthwatering lemon/yeasty nose, while on the palate there is good concentration of racy ripe fruit with steely acidity and a lingering saline finish.  Just add Moules Marinières!

You need Picpoul De Pinet in your life!  (Especially if you eat seafood)

Don David (Argentina) 2021 Reserve Torrontes

92 Points - Descorchados

Torrontes is THE white wine of Argentina and this is a sublime example of the variety.  The colour is intense and bright yellow with golden edges. It has delicate aromas with flower presence, mainly roses. Orange notes blend together with toasted bread due to the touch of oak. The taste is pure finesse and elegance with a hint of the exotic. Good acidity with the freshness of citrus.

This wine matches well with Asian food of course, but also try it with smoked meats and seafood.  It is a wonderfully versatile wine.

Esk Valley (Hawkes Bay) 2021 Artisanal Chenin Blanc

5 Stars and 95/100 - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2020 (2019 Vintage)
5 Stars - Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
5 Stars - Yvonne Lorkin, April 2020 (2019 Vintage)
4 Stars - Cuisine Specialty Whites Tasting, October 2020 (2019 Vintage)

This is a stunning example of Chenin Blanc, a classic Loire valley grape.

Winemakers note
"This is a rich and full-bodied style of Chenin Blanc. It showcases the yellow fruit nature of Chenin Blanc, with notes of pineapple, quince and honey evident. The wine is complex with a small amount of residual sugar providing richness in a Vouvray demi-sec style. Delicious as a young wine, the wine will also gain further complexity with time in the bottle."

Falconhead (Hawkes Bay) 2021 Viognier

This is an amazingly good buy. Viognier (Vee-on-yay) is a notoriusly difficult grape to grow so very rarely do we see such a bargain buy from this delightfully oppulent grape!

The previous vintage took out Gold Medal and Trophy at the Royal easter show. Produced by the team behind Morton Estate, before the brand was sold.

A very aromatic wine with aromas of ripe apricot, white flowers and a hint of vanilla spice. The palate is full, rich and layered with complexity. Flavours of ripe orchard fruits and honeysuckle complemented with a noticeable sweetness, supported by the elevated alcohol results in a beautifully balanced wine with a long delicious finish.

Forrest (Marlborough) 2019 Petit Manseng

94 Points - Cameron Douglas MS
"Lovely aromatics, varietal and intense. Layers of peach and elderflower, acacia and ripe red apple then honeysuckle. No mistaking the residual sweetness on the palate which is immediately contrasted by high acidity and flavours of fresh white and tropical fruits. Great texture and length - an excellent food wine. Totally smashable."
A pretty rare variety in New Zealand. Petit Manseng is a grape origninating in southwest France that performs the delicate balancing act of ripening very late while keeping its fresh, bright acidity. The result is wine that finishes dryish but richly ripe and complex on the palate.
A must try for all foodies, great with strong cheeses and cured meat.

Konrad (Marlborough) 2020 Sauvignon Blanc

"At bottling the Konrad Sauvignon Blanc is already impressive. The aromatics of this wine are primary aromas of gooseberry, passion fruit and elderflower. In the mouth the wine is immediately appealing with more of those exotic tropical fruits and textural tone weaving seamlessly with crisp acid and a slice of residual fruit sweetness. It is a wine we are immensely proud to call our flagship wine." Konrad Wines

Tasting Note The pale lemon appearance underlies a wine with wonderful intensity. Aromatically the wine shows fresh notes of lemon, lime, tropical fruits, guava, and subtle spice. On the palate enjoy hints of citrus, nashi pear and lemon barley. This wine has wonderful complexity; its lively acidity is in harmony with the sustained finish.

fruit was picked at optimum ripeness and pressed off into two separate parcels. The first parcel was cool fermented in stainless steel tanks to enhance aromatics. To build the complexity a second parcel was fermented in large format 1000 litre German Oak Fuder barrels. These barrels hold a warmer fermentation temperature; the shape and size minimise oak influence. The wine had a short period resting on fine lees prior to bottling in winter 2021.

Perfect summer sipping!

Millton (Gisborne) 2020 Te Arai Chenin Blanc

Commercial description

"Over the years our determination to produce one of the world’s best wines from this variety is a seasonal challenge and a bottled fantasy. In 2020 we did four selections from the vineyard of hand-harvested the grapes. On the crush pad, the stems are discarded as these grapes give up their juice very easily during the long slow press cycle. The juice is collected together and allowed to settle for only a short time as we wish to keep the fine sediments, for it is here that all the nutrients lie which satisfy a well-behaved fermentation. The fermentation and maturation take place in demi-muids (large 600-litre oak barrels) and stainless steel tanks. The wine matures in these vessels over time, and without the obtrusion of oak tannins, which would otherwise disrespect the subtle fruit aromas.

Ageing potential is at least 10 years from the date of release.

Vegan and Vegetarian Friendly"

Te Whare Ra (Marlborough) 2017 Noble Riesling 375ml

95 points - Sam Kim
"This is outrageously unctuous and delicious; the opulent bouquet shows dried apricot, Manuka honey, lemon curd and orange marmalade characters, followed by a lavishly sweet palate that is mouthfilling and viscous. Undeniably sweet and luxurious, this is superbly structured by bright acidity, finishing impressively long and decadent."

5 stars - Raymond Chan
"Deep, golden-yellow colour with slight orange hues, lighter edged. The nose is softly fresh and densely packed with concentrated and opulent aromas of very ripe tropical and citrus fruits harmoniously entwined with nectar and honey, marmalade, crystallised fruits and some savoury musky botrytis elements. Very sweet to taste and distinctly unctuous with decadent flavours of ripe tropical fruit and citrus fruit, along with honey, nectar, crystallised fruits, figs and caramel, with an underlay of musky botrytis. This exudes opulence, with a rounded, plush mouthfeel on a fine line of underlying acidity. The wine carries smoothly to a long succulent finish of tropical fruits and honey. This is an opulent and decadent Noble Riesling with tropical and citrussy fruit, honey and nectar, marmalade, caramel and musk on an unctuous palate."

All fruit for this wine was hand-picked, bunch selected and then hand-sorted. The fruit was loaded to the press, and then foot stomped by our grower – what a bloke! We then left the foot crushed grapes and juice overnight to give them some good skin contact time, and extract the maximum amount of flavour. Then the next day they were slowly and gently air-bag pressed. The wine was fermented 100% in stainless steel and was fermented very slowly, at cool temperatures to retain aromatics. The finished wine then spent time on lees, post ferment, for added texture and complexity. This wine has not been fined and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians and anyone else who loves authentic, hand-made wines

Lifted aromas of honeysuckle, apricots, orange rind and manuka honey follow on to luscious flavours of ripe apricots, nectarines, and cumquat marmalade. This wine displays characteristic unctuous, botrytis influenced flavours which are balanced by a fine backbone of ripe acidity. This wine is finely structured with great length and persistence of flavour. This 2017 Noble Riesling is enjoyable to drink now and will also benefit from careful cellaring for 6-8 years.
