Beach House (Hawkes Bay) 2019 Merlot Cab Franc

Winery description
"The Beach House Merlot Cabernet Franc blend is a brand new wine in our portfolio. This vintage we trialled adding some Cabernet Franc to our Merlot and low and behold! A new wine was born. The fruit was hand-picked, de-stemmed and fermented separately in small open topped vats where they were gently hand plunged and pumped over to aid in extracting the maximum amount of flavour and colour from the berries. The wine spent 11 months in fine French oak. The Merlot Franc screams black forest cake with loads of dense plums and chocolate. Soft and plush across the palate but with plenty of weight and length, this will pair perfectly with slow cooked beef cheeks. Will drink nicely well into the 2020’s"

Te Mata Estate (Hawkes Bay) 2019 Merlot Cabernets

The grapes for Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 were harvested between 26 March and 11 April 2019 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Dartmoor, Havelock Hills and Gimblett sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay. The individual parcels of each variety, from each plot, were de-stemmed before a traditional warm fermentation, followed by extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were pressed, returned to tank for malolactic fermentation, then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for nine months’ maturation before blending. The wines were regularly topped and racked, throughout maturation, blended and traditionally egg-white fined before bottling. The final blend is 44 % Merlot, 36 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 % Cabernet Franc.

Dark ruby with a bright purple edge, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 has ripe raspberry and blackberry on the nose and a palate that unfolds with Black Doris plum, cherry syrup, mint and cocoa-powder. Brambly, ripe, cabernet fruit sits atop soft, savoury tannins. Classically inviting, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 is complex and instantly-appealing at the same time.

Villa Maria (Hawkes Bay) 2019 Cellar Selection Merlot Cabernet

Champion Merlot Dominant Hawke's Bay Wine Awards

Gold Medal - Royal Easter Show Wine Awards

Gold Medal - Hawke's Bay Wine Awards

Gold Medal - New Zealand International Wine Competition

This deeply coloured wine displays perfumed aromas of dark berry fruits, violets and dried herbs with complexing oak spice characters. A smooth and approachable palate follows with sweet fruit, supple tannins and moreish acidity. Serving Suggestions Merlot-Cabernet blends are particularly good when paired with robust, fullflavoured dishes, red meat and cheeses. Drink now or hold for up to 5-8 years when the wine will develop further complexity.

2019 was an exceptional Hawkes Bay vintage, particularly for reds. Moderate yields combined with warmer than average temperatures and dry conditions encouraged fruit to achieve optimum ripeness and maintain excellent condition through to harvest. The fruit from this wine comes from a range of Villa Maria Hawkes Bay vineyards, where free draining alluvial soils temper vine vigour, resulting in low yields of ripe and concentrated fruit. Post fermentation the parcels were pressed to oak barriques, 15% new, for 12 months maturation.  77% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cab Franc, 2% Malbec
