Radburnd Cellars (Hawkes Bay) 2018 Merlot Cabernet

16points -
“Released October 2020. 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kate Radburnd has 35 vintages under her belt and until now has made wine for other people, mainly at Pask.
Here she launches her own label. These grapes were hand-picked from free-draining sites. Aged for 21 months in a mix of French barriques. TA 5.8 g/l. Appetising, gently- textured wine that's far from a blockbuster but has good integrity. Lifted, leafy nose and some sweetness on palate entry but nothing heavy or exaggerated. I'm tasting this, as instructed, at room temperature but I think it could take a little cooling too. Light to medium body. Quite sophisticated. When to drink 2020 – 2026”

Powerful, restrained and elegant, this blend exhibits lifted aromatics and berry fruits, revealing layers of complexity that will slowly unfold. Highly structured with balanced acidity and tannin, this wine will continue to evolve for the next decade.

Batches of hand harvested fruit was chilled overnight before processing the following day. Chilled bunches were hand sorted and de-stemmed, and whole berries were transferred to open fermenters with some foot stomping. Whole bunches were also incorporated in some of the Merlot fermenters. The berries were cold soaked before fermentation, with pumping over twice per day then pressed to barriques at the end of fermentation. The Merlot and Cabernet matured for 21 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Blended in December 2019 and bottled in January
2020, the final blend is approximately 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

An elegant Merlot Cabernet blend which exhibits lifted aromatics of fragrant berry fruits, sweet French oak, and underlying lavender and thyme. Complex and textural, seamless tannins harmoniously support red and black fruits, earthiness, and spice. Tautly poised to develop beautifully with bottle age.

Te Mata (Hawkes Bay) 2018 Coleraine Cabernet Merlot

18.5/20 POINTS - Joelle Thomson February 2020
"I often find myself conflicted when rating wines like this one; it’s impeccable in taste but its price puts it beyond the reach of most of us mere mortals. That said, the new 2018 Te Mata Coleraine is, without doubt, the star wine of this winery’s latest releases. It had been bottled for two months at the time of tasting in early February 2020, so it has plenty of time up its sleeve; it’s a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and tastes of dark black fruit flavours with hints of black olives, wild herbs and a full body."

97 POINTS - Nick Stock
"A very concentrated nose with impressively rich blackberry, raspberry and dark-plum aromas. Dark chocolate, violet and cedary oak here, too. Very youthful. The palate has a very rich, intense and plush feel with fresh acidity and depth, amid long, fine and compressed tannins. Good freshness and concentration. Drink or hold."

5 STARS & 98 POINTS - Sam Kim
"Undeniably well-crafted and impeccably styled, the wine exhibits cassis, dark cherry, cedar, violet and subtle tobacco characters on the nose with a light seasoning of warm spice. The palate offers outstanding concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel, combined with fabulous fruit purity and elegant oak undertones, leading to an impressively prolonged finish backed by seamlessly integrated chalky tannins. A wine of sublime sophistication and presence. A blend of 52% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. At its best: 2026 to 2038"

Surely New Zealands Most Famous red wine. First produced in 1982 now at Icon status!

A deep midnight-magenta, Coleraine ’18 is symphonic in its harmony and presence. 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc
The aromatics are immediately varietal with grace notes of cassis, raspberry leaf, fresh roses, dark chocolate, lifted black cherry, espresso and cedar. The palate deepens the opening theme. There’s tapenade, darkest blackberry and ripe plum while underneath, quietly, a precise, profound tannin structure resonates. Powerful, deep-set, graceful and complex, Coleraine ’18 is refined to an exquisite point while still retaining freshness and balance. It lingers after tasting. Layered and composed, resplendent and resolved, a gloriously seductive ensemble celebratory of all that fine New Zealand wine can be.

Te Mata Estate (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Merlot Cabernets

The grapes for Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 were harvested between 26 March and 11 April 2019 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Dartmoor, Havelock Hills and Gimblett sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay. The individual parcels of each variety, from each plot, were de-stemmed before a traditional warm fermentation, followed by extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were pressed, returned to tank for malolactic fermentation, then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for nine months’ maturation before blending. The wines were regularly topped and racked, throughout maturation, blended and traditionally egg-white fined before bottling. The final blend is 44 % Merlot, 36 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 % Cabernet Franc.

Dark ruby with a bright purple edge, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 has ripe raspberry and blackberry on the nose and a palate that unfolds with Black Doris plum, cherry syrup, mint and cocoa-powder. Brambly, ripe, cabernet fruit sits atop soft, savoury tannins. Classically inviting, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 is complex and instantly-appealing at the same time.

Serving Suggestions Merlot-Cabernet blends are particularly good when paired with robust, fullflavoured dishes, red meat and cheeses.  2019 was an exceptional Hawkes Bay vintage, particularly for reds. Moderate yields combined with warmer than average temperatures and dry conditions encouraged fruit to achieve optimum ripeness and maintain excellent condition through to harvest. The fruit from this wine comes from a range of Villa Maria Hawkes Bay vineyards, where free draining alluvial soils temper vine vigour, resulting in low yields of ripe and concentrated fruit. Post fermentation the parcels were pressed to oak barriques, 15% new, for 12 months maturation.  77% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cab Franc, 2% Malbec
