Chateau Tanunda (Barossa) 2018 Grand Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon

90 POINTS - Huon Hooke's The Real Review
A big, rambunctious expression of the variety - deep, dark red colour in the glass, with plums...jumping. The palate is more obviously cabernet with Ribena and fine, ripe tannins weaving nicely together.
94 POINTS - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Offering excellent fruit purity and intensity, the beautifully lifted bouquet shows blackcurrant, Black Doris plum, violet and spicy oak characters. It’s equally satisfying on the palate with excellent weight and textural mouthfeel backed by chalky tannins, finishing engaging and immensely appealing. At its best: now to 2032
93 POINTS - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2021
From a selection of vineyards across the Barossa and Eden valleys, small batch fermentation, matured for 18 months in French oak....Good value. Drink by 2028

Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and vanilla are accompanied by vibrant, dark berry fruits on the palate. The finish is long with fine-grained tannins. Although drinking well now, this wine may be cellared for up to ten years from vintage.

The grapes for Chateau Tanunda's Grand Barossa wines are selected from grapes grown throughout the Barossa and its myriad of sub-regions. It is this tapestry of ‘terroirs’ which enables them to create their classic and refined house style.

The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and fermented in small stainless steel open fermenters. Fermentation takes place over 7 days with twice-daily hand plunging.

After draining the free-run juice, the skins are gently pressed in the JLB Vaslin Bucher press before18 months maturation in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels.

Winery description

"The Château’ Cabernet Sauvignon displays deep, rich purple and red hues.

The bouquet has lifted aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant and spice on the velvety smooth palate with hints of cedar and mint. The extensive finish is framed by elegant, fine-grained tannins from 18 months' maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels.

The grapes for this year’s The Chateau Cabernet Sauvignon were grown on our estate vineyard in the cool climate of the Eden Valley.

The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on their skins in open fermenters with regular battonage to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine is carefully basket pressed prior to maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 18 months."

92 Points - Andrew Cailard MW Annual Vintage Selection

"Medium deep crimson. Intense black olive tapenade, dark chocolate, dark cherry aromas with roasted walnut notes. Muscular firm but vigorous wine with deep set choco-berry fruits, cedar/ sandalwood notes and grippy dry tannins. Finishes firm and tight with attractive dark fruit, sappy/ leafy notes at the finish. 2023 - 2030"

Winery note
"The individual vineyard and varietal parcels were harvested separately and fermented with wild yeast in our open topped concrete fermenters. Hand plunging was employed to gently extract colour and tannin. After a period of post fermentation maceration the individual parcels were pressed to french oak barrels and aged in cool cellars for 18 months, before blending in November 2020. This is Esk Valley's first Malbec based wine from our Gimblett Gravels vineyards. A very deeply coloured wine as you would expect from a Malbec based wine. It displays rich plummy, jammy Gimblett Gravels fruit on the nose with hints of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate it is a medley of power and concentration from Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon allied with softer Merlot tannins. This is a full bodied and complex wine, and an ideal accompaniment to red meat dishes"

95 Points - Andrew Cailard MW Annual Vintage Selection
93 Points - Meredith May The Tasting Panel Magazine
90 Points - Sam Kim Wine Orbit - New Zealand

Winery note
"The individual vineyard and varietal parcels were destemmed to our concrete and stainless steel fermenters and allowed to ferment with wild yeast. Once active the ferments were hand plunged or gently pumped over to extract tannin and colour from the skins. After a period of maceration on skins the new wines were pressed to barrel and tank for malolactic fermentation. The individual parcels were aged separately in French oak barriques for 12 months before blending and bottling in December 2020."

Winemakers Note
"This is a rich and full-bodied Gimblett Gravels blend. Densely coloured, it has a bouquet of dark cherry, blackberry, dried herbs and cedar from barrel maturation. It is soft and generous in nature and can be enjoyed as a youthful wine, but possesses sufficient tannin to age gracefully for many years."

Mills Reef (Hawkes Bay) 2019 Reserve Cabernet Merlot

Boy this is a winner. If you love a good ol Bordeaux style blend this will surely please. Its got guts and finesse!

The grapes were then gently crushed, whilst also allowing some whole berries to remain intact. The must was transferred into closed-top stainless steel tanks for a cold soak of an average four days duration.  Fermentation was then initiated, followed by daily rummaging for colour, flavour and fine tannin extraction. The resulting wine was then aged for 16 months in quality French oak barriques (25% being new wood), with one racking during élevage.

The final blend was composed, comprising 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, and judged to have already attained perfect harmony, to only require a light fining. The wine was gently filtered to preserve the wines full natural complexity, structure and flavour profile. Bottling took place on 30th October 2020 under screwcap closure.

A rich full bodied wine, this blend exudes intense blackcurrant, blackberry and plum flavours, layered with mocha and spicy cedary oak.  Ageing in quality oak has conferred a velvety smooth texture, for immediate appeal, or for judicious cellaring. Well matched with BBQ Moroccan Lamb Loin and Tabbouleh salad.
