Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2020 Lismore Pinot Gris

Winery Note

"The wine is rich, but remains finely structured and beautifully balanced. Pinot Gris from the Lismore block always achieves optimum flavours later in the season. As a result, the grapes are pickedrelatively late to achieve a wine closer to the richer style of Pinot Gris made famous in the Alsace region of France, rather than the leaner, generally bone-dry 'Pinot Grigio' version, popular in the north of Italy.

From vines now over 23 years of age, the depth and complexity of flavour make it one of our favourite food and wine matching choices, especially for anything with heady spice and/or challenging flavours. Fermented in neutral barrels for extra texture, this Pinot Gris will benefit from bottle age. Exotic aromas of guava and pink grapefruit, blend with pineapple and apple strudel. The palate is smooth and velvety with flavours of nutmeg, lemon custard and hints of beeswax. The finish has a citrus pith, textural feel that keeps it fresh, with pastry savoury notes"

90 points - Steve Bennett MW, NZ Wine Rater
"Quite intense, voluminous, pungent aroma; gooseberries, redcurrant, cut grass, dried straw and grapefruit. A clean, tangy, taut, mineral style with a stone sucking texture and plenty of freshness"

92 Points - Cam Douglas
"Plush, ripe and fleshy white fruits bouquet with aromas of Asian pears and preserved bosc. There’s a sweet mineral water seam and floral lift adding context and allure. Crisp, pure, fresh and ripe white fleshed fruit flavours, a whisper of grapefruit and gentle saline note making me salivate. The textures are satin and crisp with flavours that reflect the nose. Balanced and well made, ready to enjoy from today and through 2023."

Esk Valley (Hawkes Bay) 2021 Pinot Gris

This is a rich style of Pinot Gris with aromas and flavours of baked pear, honey, citrus and apricot. It is mouthfilling and complex, finishing long and dry. A small portion of barrel fermentation has added richness and complexity to this powerful, textural and highly drinkable wine.

The grapes were harvested in the morning while temperatures were cool and processed as quickly and gently as possible to avoid colour and tannin pick up from the pink Pinot Gris berries. The juice was settled bright before fermentation in both tank and large old oak barrels. The finished wine was left on its yeast lees with regular stirring until bottling in July 2021.

Te Kairanga TK (Martinborough) 2020 Estate Pinot Gris

This Pinot Gris is made from individual vineyard parcels, gently pressed on arrival and cool fermented in stainless steel to maintain its clean, fresh flavour. A small portion of the fruit was fermented in old French oak puncheons to add extra texture and complexity to the wine. The wine was then aged on light lees before being blended and bottled. Balanced oak treatment and minimal fining and filtration help preserve both varietal character and the inimitable personality of the terroir.

Fragrant exotic fruits and spice are front and centre in this Pinot Gris. The palate shows a refined texture and deep concentration of flavour with a long dry finish. Incredibly mouth-filling with notes of nashi pear, peach and nuts, it is an ideal match for a Japanese feast of grilled chicken and zucchini yakatori.
