Holdaway Estate (Marlborough) 2020 Sauvignon Blanc

Silver medal - New Zealand international Wine Show

94 Points 5 Stars - Sam kim Wine Orbit
"It's impressively aromatic on the nose showing passionfruit, nettle, nectarine and lime sorbet characters. The palate displays excellent concentration and focus, together with terrific fruit purity and vibrancy, leading to a gorgeously long succulent finish. At its best: now to 2025." Oct 2020.

This boutique little Sav was a hit last time so we bagged another pallet. This time its the 2020 vintage.

The 2020 vintage was an excellent one for Marlborough. A warm and dry summer gave us perfect ripening conditions, with the classic Marlborough cool nights helping the grapes retain their acidity. The harvest period had ideal conditions, with no weather pressure so harvest decisions were made easily, resulting in clean fruit with excellent flavour concentration.
This wine has a complex array of flavours, with lifted aromas of ripe citrus including grapefruit and mandarin, it also shows passionfruit along with hints of nettles and bell pepper.
The palate has a refreshing but elegant acidity, with appealing fruit weight and a delicate minerality that leads through to a pleasant and lingering finish.

Winery Description

"This single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc has some barrel fermentation and also extended lees contact giving the wine a broader, more complex character, along with a flinty minerality reminiscent of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

Elegant, with a bright, clear lemon gold hue and an intriguing nose of stone fruit and gooseberry. Fresh and inviting, the palate shows intense lemon and tropical notes with a creamy undertone. A wonderful flinty and mineral feel, with racy acidity and a long, crisp finish."

Naked Vine (Nelson) 2020 Sauvignon Blanc

18.5/20 pts - Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews (under original label)
Nelson Bright, even, pale straw-yellow. The nose is fresh and vibrant, well-packed with aromas of tropical guava, passionfruit, lime, penetrating with a dusting of white pepper, along with lime flowers, herbaceous notes of capsicum. Medium-light bodied, the palate is fresh with bright aromas of lime, passionfruit, backed up by ripe guava; underlying flowers, capsicum and white pepper are integrated. A light phenolic grip reminiscent nuances of oyster shells and sea salt. The bright acidity flows with good energy and buoyancy, carries delicate florals and lifted spices to a fine- textured lingering finish. Match with oysters and grilled lemon sole over the next 3 years.

4.5 Stars - Sam kim, Wine Orbit (under original label)

Nelson makes some darn good Savvy!

A tasty number from the Motueka Winemakers Group that packs a real punch.  Bright fruit, grapefruit, and crunchy green apple aromas. More crunchy fruit on the palate with a touch of mineral smokey character. Juicy, satisfying finish.
