Gold Medal - New World Wine Awards 2011

A Barrique Fermented style Chardonnay of fruit grown on the stony plains of Marlborough.

Ripe summer nectarine, apple skin and freshly baked brioche aromas appear on the nose. The palate, with its delicate entry, has fresh presence with stone, citrus blossom and hazelnut notes. Notes of lemon, almonds and vanilla linger over the fine mineral finish.

Nice well-balanced wine with a bit more oak influence than some. Medium gold in color, with oak, peach, pear, and caramel on the nose. Creamy full mouthfeel. Tastes slightly of citrus but mostly apricot/peach and some mineral. Long finish. I had hoped for some more buttery tones given the Barrique Ferment label, but I'm still pretty pleased with this Chardonnay. Give this one a bit of time in the glass to reveal all the subtle spiciness. Good full-bodied wine. Went really well with my chicken/cheese pasta dish (really much better than it sounds!) - should work with any food that has a bit of weight and not too much spice. Will definitely age well, and will probably pick up those buttery tones over time.
