Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2019 Crimson Pinot Noir

93 POINTS - Cameron Douglas MS camerondouglasms.com
"Youthful, vibrant, fresh and lively bouquet with aromas of cherries and plums, dried herbs and silty soil layers, a fine lees and wood spice aromatics. Overall - vibrant, youthful and high energy. On the palate - dry, youthful, plenty of texture from tannin and acidity, bright young red fruit flavours contrast the texture and a vibrant youthful mouthfeel overall. Best drinking from 2022 through 2028+."

Winery note
"20 years ago we named this special Pinot Noir “Crimson” in support of Project Crimson, the charitable trust working to replant and preserve native red-flowering pōhutukawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand.

Crimson is our selection of parcels from younger Pinot Noir vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity around 15-20 years.

This vintage has the intensity and structure that we love from Martinborough – complex notes of rose petal, blood orange, sandalwood, tamarind and toasted rice entice aromatically while the flavours of cranberry, cinnamon and bergamot tea align with the soft savoury notes of tobacco to taste. This structure makes for a beautifully food-friendly Pinot Noir."

Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2019 Te Wa Sauvignon Blanc

Te Wā Sauvignon Blanc is hand picked and sorted to remove any botrytis. It is then broken into portions, with 100% whole bunch fermentations, destemmed fruit fermented on skins in large oak hatch barrels and then the remaining portions pressed and fermented in oak barrels and small stainless-steel tanks. This blend of skins fermentations with the more traditional pressed juice results in an exotically perfumed wine, with aromas of grapefruit, guava, green papaya salad and Vietnamese mint. The palate compliments, an intense nose, with flavours of ginger, lemon grass and cinnamon. The 2019 season with it lower yields and great balance of sugar and flavour intensity has resulted in a wine with real palate volume and a long lingering finish. The balance of acid, and phenolics from the skins will see this wine developing further over the next 5 years.

Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2020 Lismore Pinot Gris

Winery Note

"The wine is rich, but remains finely structured and beautifully balanced. Pinot Gris from the Lismore block always achieves optimum flavours later in the season. As a result, the grapes are pickedrelatively late to achieve a wine closer to the richer style of Pinot Gris made famous in the Alsace region of France, rather than the leaner, generally bone-dry 'Pinot Grigio' version, popular in the north of Italy.

From vines now over 23 years of age, the depth and complexity of flavour make it one of our favourite food and wine matching choices, especially for anything with heady spice and/or challenging flavours. Fermented in neutral barrels for extra texture, this Pinot Gris will benefit from bottle age. Exotic aromas of guava and pink grapefruit, blend with pineapple and apple strudel. The palate is smooth and velvety with flavours of nutmeg, lemon custard and hints of beeswax. The finish has a citrus pith, textural feel that keeps it fresh, with pastry savoury notes"
