Chateau Tanunda (Barossa) 2016 Grand Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon

90 POINTS Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2019

"Terrific dark purple-garnet hue; it shows its place and is a bold expression of the variety with intense fruit all blackberries and mulberries, dark chocolate, lots of herbs and cedary oak. Quite structured and austere although the sweet fruit tempers the grippy tannins and it feels warm on the finish. Drink By 2028"

Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and vanilla are accompanied by vibrant, dark berry fruits on the palate. The finish is long with fine-grained tannins from sixteen months maturation in a combination of new and older French oak hogsheads.

Although drinking well now, this wine may be cellared for up to ten years from vintage.

For our Grand Barossa wines we select grapes grown throughout the Barossa and its myriad of sub-regions. It is this tapestry of ‘terroirs’ which enables us to create our classic and refined house style.

Chateau Tanunda (Barossa) 2013 The Chateau Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Gold Medal - Berlin Wine Trophy 2015

91 POINTS The Wine Front

‘The Château’ Cabernet Sauvignon displays deep, rich purple and red hues. The bouquet has lifted aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant and spice on the velvety smooth palate with hints of cedar and mint. The extensive finish is framed by elegant, fine-grained tannins from two years’ maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels.

The grapes for this year’s The Chateau Cabernet Sauvignon were grown on the sandy loam soils of blocks 12 and 16 of our Bethany vineyard which was first planted in 1960.

The grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and spent seven days on their skins in open fermenters with twice daily hand-plunging and pumping over of the cap to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. This was followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels prior to eighteen months’ maturation in our cellars.

90 POINTS Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast

"This is classic Barossa from a historic estate that was restored back to its original grandeur 20 years ago by the Geber family. It is an earthy brambly dense wine with brambly red berries, sun-drenched plums, chocolate and an earthy dusty oak spice. Plush and fleshy with savory tannins, you could drink this now with protein or wait up to twenty years to watch it blossom"

The hand-picked grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on skins in an open fermenter with twice daily hand-plunging and gentle pump-overs of the cap to extract colour, flavours and tannins.

This is followed by careful basket pressing and maturation in a combination of American and French oak barrels for 24 months prior to bottling.

The Barossa Old Vine Charter was instituted to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted.

The grapes for this wine come from just two small vineyards, one in the sub-region of Nuriootpa that lies on sandy loams and alluvial clays and the other in Vine Vale, a sub-region of the Barossa that lies on very deep sandy soils over clay. These low yielding “Old Vines” were planted between 1960 and 1961 and are now fully matured with root structure and trunk thickness that encourages diversity of flavour and character.
