Lawson's Dry Hills (Marlborough) 2020 Pioneer Gewurztraminer

94 Points Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"Seductive and complex bouquet with fragrant spices, forest flowers, sweet scented white fleshed fruits, caramelised citrus, apple then honeysuckle. Weighty, fleshy, silky and delicious on the palate. Finesse and charm, mouthfeel a fresh. Well-made and ready from today and through 2025+." (October 2020)

From Lawsons Dry Hills, Marlborough icon. From thirty five year old vines with trunks as thick as thighs, this unique wine embraces everything that is so good about Gewürztraminer. Hugely aromatic with a pronounced and pungent perfume, the ensuing palate is rich, weighty and oily with intense, lingering flavours of exotic fruits and spices. Haunting, unwavering and highly desirable.

This Gewurztraminer is from the company’s original vineyard, planted in 1982, that surrounds the winery. These unirrigated vines are deeply rooted in clay soils which help to give the wine intensity, weight and body, resulting in a rich, mouth-coating texture.

This stunning example of Gewurztraminer shows its true colours at a young age but will also reward time in the bottle. Enjoy over the next five years and probably longer.

Lawson's Dry Hills (Marlborough) 2021 Sauvignon Blanc

2021 Estate Sauvignon Blanc offers delicate floral notes and ripe tropical fruit layered over the typical Marlborough characters of passionfruit, lime and fresh, green herbs.

The palate has lovely concentration, balanced acidity and a gentle, dry finish. This is a beautiful wine from a great vintage! Vineyards and viticulture This wine comes from a handful of our vineyards mostly situated in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and is complemented by a small amount of fruit from the Awatere. An early budburst and inclement weather at flowering lead to low yields, however the upside of this is that the 2021 season produced ripe and intensely flavoured grapes. Winemaking Low crops and fine weather during the harvest period allowed us to pick these grapes in perfect condition. Each block was picked when we considered them to have reached maximum passionfruit characters and while the acidity was still bright and crisp.

The grapes were gently pressed before being fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected cultured yeast, while 5% was fermented with wild yeast in old French barriques.
