The 2020 is a remarkable Cape Crest; palest lemon and brilliant in the glass. Luscious citrus and succulent stone fruit slide effortlessly towards a precise and lingering finish of gooseberry, lime and sea salt. Among all the ripe and pure fruit on the palate floats crunchy acidity and complexing grace-notes of dill, coriander, beeswax and woodsmoke. Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’20 is a signature example, with drive, moreish appeal and elegance to spare.

The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February 2021. Cape Crest ’20 is a blend of 85% sauvignon blanc, 9% semillon and 6% sauvignon gris.

Like most Sauvignon this can be enjoyed young and fresh and best served chilled. But don’t be shy to throw a couple of bottles in the cellar, it should evolve nicely between 3-5 years from vintage.

"Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest Havelock Hills vineyards first planted in 1892.

Coleraine ’20 was hand harvested from separate plots within Te Mata’s vineyards between 19 March and 2 April 2020. WINEMAKING Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm, plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 17 months’ maturation. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in January 2021. The finished wine was bottled in December 2021. The final blend is 57% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 7% cabernet franc.

 A gleaming obsidian-dark, Coleraine ’20 flashes in the glass. From its depths glimmers wild roses and cedar, blackcurrants, dark cherries, plums - a rapid symmetry of perfectly ripe dark fruit. Notes of cocoa-nib, thyme, and layer upon layer of fine tannin are polished to a mirror-finish, shimmering the length of the wine. From its elevated aromatics to its monumental mid-palate weight, intense vitality, and long radiant finish, Coleraine ’20 is a window on midnight. Replete in detail. "Brilliant lemon-gold, Elston Chardonnay ’20 has the immediate aroma of lime blossom, fresh golden nectarine, creamy nougat and delicate meadow flowers. Freshness and ripe acidity shine in a palate laden with peach, citrus, pineapple, and oyster shell highlights. With texture, depth and stunning brightness of fruit, Elston Chardonnay ’20 has a clarity and focus that radiates right through its long and luminous finish. Each parcel was gently whole-cluster pressed, cold settled and racked to new and
seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines remained in contact with their yeast lees, with a number going through malolactic fermentation. The finest lots were selected for further maturation, spending a total of 10 months in barrel."

Te Mata Estate (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Merlot Cabernets

The grapes for Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 were harvested between 26 March and 11 April 2019 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Dartmoor, Havelock Hills and Gimblett sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay. The individual parcels of each variety, from each plot, were de-stemmed before a traditional warm fermentation, followed by extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were pressed, returned to tank for malolactic fermentation, then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for nine months’ maturation before blending. The wines were regularly topped and racked, throughout maturation, blended and traditionally egg-white fined before bottling. The final blend is 44 % Merlot, 36 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 % Cabernet Franc.

Dark ruby with a bright purple edge, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 has ripe raspberry and blackberry on the nose and a palate that unfolds with Black Doris plum, cherry syrup, mint and cocoa-powder. Brambly, ripe, cabernet fruit sits atop soft, savoury tannins. Classically inviting, Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’19 is complex and instantly-appealing at the same time.

Estate Syrah ’20 was harvested between 21 and 28 March 2020 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in Hawke’s Bay’s Dartmoor, Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels sub-regions.The individual parcels of syrah from each plot were destemmed for fermentation and remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing. It was then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months’ maturation, during which time it was regularly topped and racked. The wine received a traditional egg white fining before bottling."
