GOLD MEDAL - Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2021

94 Points - James Suckling
"A rich, ripe expression of blueberries, sweet spices, violets and blackberries. The palate has smooth-honed, blueberry and blackberry flavors with plush, ribbon-like layers of tannin. Strong yet fine style here."

5 Stars - Michael Cooper
"The powerful, rich, sweet-fruited 2019 vintage was hand-picked, matured in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Deep ruby, it is extremely youthful, with a strong surge of vibrant, plummy, spicy flavours, a hint of liquorice, fresh acidity, and good tannin backbone. Best drinking 2023+."

Considered the "Central Otago Guru" of winemaking, Grant Taylor is an exceptionally talented and meticulous winemaker. Valli. Established in 1998 and named after Grant's Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from and Italian winemaking background. The Valli range of wines are truly superb and have the credits to back them up.

The Bendio is from the Chinamans terrace site, and is a powerful beast with 58% whole bunch used. The winery notes
"Purple hue with an incredible floral fragrance and lifted fruit aromas of boysenberry and plum, followed by savoury notes of toasted almond, coffee, and cedar. Flavours of blackberry and cherry on the palate with nutmeg, mushroom, and earthy loam. The palate is voluminous and mouth-filling with silky tannins that build in the mouth giving a long, memorable finish. Powerful yet refined, this is quintessential Bendigo Pinot with a tangy freshness that comes from grapes grown at elevation. Lively and inviting in its youth, this wine will also go the distance and is worthy of cellaring for 12+ years."

"
The stylish 2019 vintage was hand-picked, matured in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright ruby, it is mouthfilling and supple, with vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, a hint of herbs, fresh acidity, nutty, savoury notes adding complexity and an inviting fragrance. A very graceful, youthful red, it’s well worth cellaring to 2022+."

95 Points - James Suckling
"Such attractive, fragrant complexity here with bright strawberries, red cherries and spice, as well as a leafy edge and wild herbs. Some pepper, too. The palate has striking elegance with piercing acidity and flavors of yellow clingstone peach, nectarine and red plum. Smooth-honed, long and plush tannins."

Winery note
"Glimmering garnet hue with captivating aromas of fresh herbs (wormwood, rosemary, and wild thyme) that “leap” out of the glass and are complemented by fig, cherry and dried rose petals. The palate commences savoury with delicious dried herb, dukkah, and mushroom flowing into bright red fruit, with a long and spicy finish. The wine has a silky texture with fine tannins and exquisite detail. This vintage has delivered a “classic” Gibbston Pinot Noir that is understated, graceful and complex with so much intrigue creating an aura of suspense. A delight to the senses at release, this wine will continue to captivate for 15 or so years." Jen Parr

Valli (Waitaki) 2019 Vendemmia Tardiva Pinot Gris

This late harvest style of Pinot Gris is a hidden Gem from one of Otago greats

Winery note
"This exotic wine is laden with fruit flavours – exemplifying the Italian term “tutti frutti” which literally means “all the fruits”. From Asian jack fruit to pear essence, apple and banana oil – the nose is intriguing and intense. The wine has a notably oily texture, yet ends fresh with flavours of ripe pear, cantaloupe, quince and honey. This rich and full-bodied wine is great on its own but also will pair well with weighty and/or salty dishes, traditional Korean or Chinese cuisine, and soft cheeses."

Valli 2015 Waitaki Chardonnay

20 Points Five stars -  Raymond Chan

"Pale straw colour, the nose was redolent of subtle citrus fruit with subtle mineral, creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak aromas, expressed with freshness and finesse. Beautifully juxtaposing finesse with underlying power, this appeared delicate, then revealed layer upon layer of citrus and stonefruits, mealy nuances, integrated spicy and nutty oak, with creamy barrel-ferment textures alongside fine, bracing acidity. This could have been superb Grand Cru Chablis or a very fine Corton-Charlemagne if it wasn’t for the slightly ‘sweet’ New World’ fruitiness. A treat to taste (and drink)." - March 2017

Winery description
"Aromas of lemon zest, baked biscuits, flint and a hint of nutmeg reminiscent of old world Chardonnay. On the palate there is a beautiful balance of texture from the lees stirring and length from the wonderful limestone-centric soils of the Waitaki. Concentrated yet refined; full of character yet showing youthful shyness; This Chardonnay highlights the potential in Waitaki for producing world class wines. Made in tiny quantities this wine is a treasure to enjoy now and also worthy of burying away in the treasure chest for a handsome reward in years to come."
