Maude (Central Otago) 2023 EMW Pinot Noir

Winery description

"A celebration of two blocks of mature Pinot Noir from the Mt Maude Vineyard. As the name suggests, the blocks face opposite directions. Made in a different style - 100% whole cluster, clone 10-5, often only one pigaege during the ferment - definitely a unique winemaking twist on Pinot production. A bewitching perfume, paler in colour yet full, luscious and complex. Love it or hate it, this Pinot Noir certainly creates some debate."

Mills Reef (Hawkes Bay) 2022 Reserve Merlot Malbec

Winery note

"Immediately warm and appetising, this deliciously harmonious blend of two classical Bordeaux varieties showcases boysenberry and plum fruits, complemented with spicy leather, hints of blueberry, violets and embodied with silky smooth tannins.

The 2020/21 growing season in the Hawke's Bay enjoyed a climate of consistently warm clear sunny days and uniform temperatures, allowing grapes to develop perfectly and be harvested unhurried at optimal ripeness. Crafted from grapes grown in the highly acclaimed Gimblett Gravels, harvest occurred on the 12th and 26th March, 2021 at optimum ripeness, balance and flavour. The grapes were gently crushed, cold-soaked for three days before undergoing fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with gentle daily cap management to extract colour, flavour and fine tannin structure. A post-ferment maceration followed over ten days. The skins were then pressed off and the wine aged for eleven months in quality oak barrels (25% French new wood)"

Olcaviana (Spain) 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon

AMAZING VALUE 100% Organic wine from our friends at Sierra Norte

Once the grapes have arrive at the cellars, they are cooled to delay the fermentation, while frequent pump-overs are carried out to achieve a better extraction of colour, aroma precursors and only the soft tannins. The alcoholic fermentation is then done at a controlled temperature of 22-24°C with gentle pumping over. The marc is pressed in a pneumatic press, and then the malolactic fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks.

A dark, cherry-red colour with purple glints. Intense and lingering fruit character showing strawberries and redcurrants. Fresh on the palate with lively tannins and a lingering sensation of spice.

Pegasus Bay (Waipara) 2021 Merlot Cabernet

94 Points - James Suckling
94 Points - Cameron Douglas MS
94 Points -Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
4.5 Stars - Michael Cooper

The wine has a deep, ruby colour. The merlot has provided purple plum flavours and a plump, fleshy, mid-palate structure. Cassis elements and a backbone of mouth-filling, ripe tannins come from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Small portions of Cabernet Franc and malbec donate an ethereal, lifted bouquet, the latter giving a whiff of rose petals, as well as filling out the structure and adding to its length. It is a big, dense, chewy wine, which expands in the mouth and has a lingering, spicy after-taste.

The wine has a vibrant carmine hue. Its aromas and flavours are a complex interplay of fruity and savoury elements, suggesting cherries, raspberries and blackberries, intermingled with roast game, grilled mushrooms, black olives, liquorice and coffee. There is a dense core of fruit in the mouth that is supported by a backbone of firm, ripe tannins which flow evenly through the palate and should help the wine age gracefully.
