Ata Rangi (Martinborough) 2019 Crimson Pinot Noir

93 POINTS - Cameron Douglas MS
"Youthful, vibrant, fresh and lively bouquet with aromas of cherries and plums, dried herbs and silty soil layers, a fine lees and wood spice aromatics. Overall - vibrant, youthful and high energy. On the palate - dry, youthful, plenty of texture from tannin and acidity, bright young red fruit flavours contrast the texture and a vibrant youthful mouthfeel overall. Best drinking from 2022 through 2028+."

Winery note
"20 years ago we named this special Pinot Noir “Crimson” in support of Project Crimson, the charitable trust working to replant and preserve native red-flowering pōhutukawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand.

Crimson is our selection of parcels from younger Pinot Noir vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity around 15-20 years.

This vintage has the intensity and structure that we love from Martinborough – complex notes of rose petal, blood orange, sandalwood, tamarind and toasted rice entice aromatically while the flavours of cranberry, cinnamon and bergamot tea align with the soft savoury notes of tobacco to taste. This structure makes for a beautifully food-friendly Pinot Noir."

The name of this Pinot Noir celebrates those born of gold, the opportunists, the chancers, the fiercely ungovernable pioneers that carved out a claim on the richest rivers in the world and the self-imposed ‘law’s that controlled them.

Full of plummy fruit and spice, silky tannins and most definitely quaffable.

Giesen (Marlborough) 2017 Single Vineyard Clayvin Pinot Noir

This has to be up there with one of NZ's best Single Vineyard wines...

Southern Valleys, Malrborough, New Zealand VINEYARD HISTORY Clayvin Vineyard, planted 1993, North facing, was Marlborough’s first significant hillside vineyard. The Clayvin Vineyard is organically farmed, high density planted using the competition between vines to reduce vigour, promoting root structure and delivering highly concentrated fruit. Initially taking a long term lease, seeing the potential the Giesen brothers purchased the vineyard outright in 2015.

Handpicked from the B, C, D F and G Blocks. All fruit was hand-sorted in the vineyard before coming to the winery. Prior to harvest, a small vineyard ferment called a Pied de Cuve was developed, which is then used to inoculate the fruit at the winery, prompting a natural wild ferment consisting of yeast that are specific to the Clayvin vineyard. Minimal cold soak, with a 5 to 10 day ferment. The post-ferment maceration was up to 10 days so as not to extract hard, big tannins. 100% wild ferment. Basket pressed, Matured in 100% French Oak 300L Hogsheads with 29% new oak.

Great cellaring wine, Giesen recommends up to 10 years

Giesen Organic (Marlborough) 2015 Pinot Noir

Fruit was gently de-stemmed as soon as it arrived at the winery and then added to open top fermenters by gravity. A cold soak for five to seven days allowed the early development of colour and flavour prior to fermentation. Delicate hand plunging of the ferments ensure soft extraction of tannin and colour. After 14 days maceration the fruit was gently basket pressed with the free run wine aged in French oak 300L barrels for 12 months. It then received a further 24 months bottle ageing before release creating superb complexity.

The key to the perfect food match is to find the perfect occasion. When you’re enjoying time with friends and family, serve this wine alongside a decadent, rich dish such as Chinese five-spice duck - or for something European, a French-style cassoulet.

Henri Cauvard (France) 2016 Volnay

Volnay, admired for its delicacy and sappy style. Always been thought of as the most feminine of Bourgogne wines. Though there are vigorous and muscular versions, it truly does stand out among the red wines of the Côte de Beaune. The colour varies from bright ruby to a light garnet.

Aromas are of violet, gooseberry, cherry, and spices. Gamey notes and cooked prune. It has an immediate appeal which, added to a slight natural precocity, means it can be fully open while still relatively young. Fresh, the finish is warm.

Konrad (Marlborough) 2020 Pinot Noir

5 Stars, 94 Points -  Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Konrad Hengstler began planting vines in Marlborough in 1996, it didn’t take him long to shake hands with the Giesen brothers. Their shared commitment to quality shaped their partnerships across decades, ultimately leading Konrad to pass the baton on his retirement. The Giesen brothers continue Konrad Wines’ legacy, distributing quality wines around the world.

In the mouth the wine is firm up front, showing classic black cherry and damson plum fruit with lovely density and poise. The tannins are ripe and powdery giving an impression of mocha and liquorice.Structural acidity gives the wine great length of flavour, allowing the fruit to run its full course through the palate.
