Kumeu River Wines and the owners, the Brajkovich family, are icons of the New Zealand wine industry. This Chardonnay consistently over delivers for its modest price tag!!

Winery description
"Showing lively lime and lemon aromas and a flinty, mineral edginess with hints of fig and white peach. The weighty mid-palate shows peachy ripeness along with crisp acid that gives the wine a refreshing cleansing quality.
Produced from hand harvested grapes grown in Kumeu and Hawke's Bay, this wine was fermented 45% in old French oak barriques and 55% in stainless steel tanks. The barrel fermentation provides some richness but very little oak in influence."

Kumeu River (Kumeu) Village 2020 Pinot Gris

Hand-harvested and sorted in our Kumeu Vineyards then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented using local wild yeast with extended maturation on the yeast lees.

The aromas have typical peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that we have come to expect from Pinot Gris. The wine is lively, complex and lingers on the palate. Pinot Gris is a variety that goes particularly well with food, including quite intensely flavoured dishes. It is also one of the few wine styles that can handle the spiciness of chilli.

Prety serious wine at this level!

4 Stars - Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2020 January 2021

93 Points - Cameron Douglas MS October 2020 Striking bouquet
"Fragrant, intensely fruited, spicy and varietal. Flavours of exotic fruits steeped in flowers and spices. Apples and fresh lychees, lemon candy and roses. Silky texture with medium acidity, a core of fruit, loaded with spices and a lengthy finish. Well-made and ready to pair with all white fleshed foods and vegan dishes. best from today and through 2024."

The palate is soft, round and luscious but with wonderful weight and depth. Turkish delight flavours add to the wine’s complexity and give way to ripe tropical fruits on the mid-palate while the finish has a pithy lemon character. Long, concentrated and highly memorable. Vineyards and viticulture Our Winery Block and the Woodward Vineyard located just a few hundred metres down the road. Two and three-cane, VSP pruned vines. On heavy clay soils which retain moisture and allow us to grow these vines without irrigation. These clays give weight and mouthfeel to the wine.

Try with exotic, well-flavoured and spicy foods such as Moroccan dishes with dried fruits or Asian-inspired foods. It works well with these flavours: fresh ginger, clove, cinnamon, allspice, turmeric, madras curry, sichuan pepper, soy sauce, sesame, almond, rose water

Lawson's Dry Hills (Marlborough) 2020 Pioneer Gewurztraminer

94 Points Cameron Douglas MS (2019 vintage)
"Seductive and complex bouquet with fragrant spices, forest flowers, sweet scented white fleshed fruits, caramelised citrus, apple then honeysuckle. Weighty, fleshy, silky and delicious on the palate. Finesse and charm, mouthfeel a fresh. Well-made and ready from today and through 2025+." (October 2020)

From Lawsons Dry Hills, Marlborough icon. From thirty five year old vines with trunks as thick as thighs, this unique wine embraces everything that is so good about Gewürztraminer. Hugely aromatic with a pronounced and pungent perfume, the ensuing palate is rich, weighty and oily with intense, lingering flavours of exotic fruits and spices. Haunting, unwavering and highly desirable.

This Gewurztraminer is from the company’s original vineyard, planted in 1982, that surrounds the winery. These unirrigated vines are deeply rooted in clay soils which help to give the wine intensity, weight and body, resulting in a rich, mouth-coating texture.

This stunning example of Gewurztraminer shows its true colours at a young age but will also reward time in the bottle. Enjoy over the next five years and probably longer.

Lawson's Dry Hills (Marlborough) 2021 Sauvignon Blanc

2021 Estate Sauvignon Blanc offers delicate floral notes and ripe tropical fruit layered over the typical Marlborough characters of passionfruit, lime and fresh, green herbs.

The palate has lovely concentration, balanced acidity and a gentle, dry finish. This is a beautiful wine from a great vintage! Vineyards and viticulture This wine comes from a handful of our vineyards mostly situated in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and is complemented by a small amount of fruit from the Awatere. An early budburst and inclement weather at flowering lead to low yields, however the upside of this is that the 2021 season produced ripe and intensely flavoured grapes. Winemaking Low crops and fine weather during the harvest period allowed us to pick these grapes in perfect condition. Each block was picked when we considered them to have reached maximum passionfruit characters and while the acidity was still bright and crisp.

The grapes were gently pressed before being fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected cultured yeast, while 5% was fermented with wild yeast in old French barriques.

91/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, May 2020 (2019 Vintage)

Winery description

"A classic North Canterbury summer then enabled this smaller crop to mature beautifully. Accelerated ripening allowed harvest to take place slightly earlier than usual, and favourable autumn weather ensured the grapes were picked in perfect condition.

The wine is lemon-straw in colour, with intense varietal aromas of lychee, quince, ginger, honeysuckle and spice. The palate is rich and unctuous, yet there remains a lively freshness and vibrancy. Pre-ferment skin contact has added structure and ripe phenolics, giving the wine satisfying length and balancing its off dry finish."

Matahiwi (Hawkes Bay) 2020 Holly Chardonnay

95 Points - Sam kim - Wine Orbit

Sourced from two great vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, this is a rich barrel fermented Chardonnay in the classic style with the accent on complexity and fruit weight.

Harvested, pressed and the juice run immediately to French Barriques, 30% of which were new. Fermentation occurred in barrel with both wild and cultured yeasts to add complexity. Once fermentation was complete the wine remained in barrel on full lees for a total of 10 months, with regular stirring and topping to promote texture and autolytic complexity. A portion (approximately 50%) of the barrels went through Malolactic fermentation in spring to enhance mouthfeel and buttery characters.

Perfect with seafood, roast chicken or huhu grubs sautéed in garlic butter. Already enjoyable, this wine will continue to improve over the next 3 to 7 years.
