Trophy - Hawkes Bay Wine Show 2016
Gold Medal - Hawkes Bay Wine Show 2016

The nose exhibits brambly fruits, dark chocolate and mixed spice with a hint of lifted toasty oak. A rich, bold entry onto the palate gives way to a wash of dark fruits and spice. This is a big and bold wine with ripe full tannins. A fine example of the high level of intensity the Cabernet Franc variety can bring on the Gimblett Gravels. Cabernet Franc is one of Chief Winemaker Chris Harrison's favourite varieties and he believes that this particular vintage of Cabernet Franc stands out as one of the greats.

We pulled this one out the night of the big quake, so evaluation was done by torchlight. Of course, the cuisine of the evening had to be just about anything cooked up on the barbie. This wine has a lovely ruby red color, with cherries/plums/oak/cedar on the nose. Some rough tannins, but still quaffable on it's own. Taste of cherries with a touch of vanilla. We felt the strongest feature, unfortunately, was that this wine was very alcoholic. We also felt is was a bit weak in the Cab Franc character overall, but thought it would make a very good, well-accepted-by-lots-of-your-buddies BBQ wine.

This was an unusual red and the tongue delivered what the nose promised.

Beach House Cabernet Franc 2009 from The Track Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke’s Bay. A dark and nearly opaque cherry red with a magenta rim, shiny and clear, and an oily-looking medium-high viscosity. The nose was scented with irises and plum fruit; gaining milk chocolate, vanillin oak, and green tobacco leaf--not dried. The palate was very concentrated and liquorice-like with again plum and tobacco leaf as well as bitter espresso notes. A powerful, intense wine but lacking the typical Cabernet Franc varietal fragrance and litheness on the palate; instead blocky, impenetrable, and seemingly overdone. Later gaining hints of iodine and iron while the fresh, clean finish lingered medium-long; slowly tapering but with a return of the bitter coffee bean oak character. Whereas the 2007 vintage of this wine was subtly oaked this one seemed heavy-handed and over-enthusiastic, obscuring the otherwise quality fruit. A poor match with corned beef, salad, and new potatoes, but it improved on the second day. This was largely due to the better food match of stuffed courgettes including bacon, cheese, and dried tomato, where the oil and salt in the food provided the wine with a better foil. Probably an even better match: a steak complete with a charred, partially-caramelised exterior. This wine will keep for many years but I’m uncertain whether it will improve with cellaring--the oak may simply continue to dominate.

Our famous 5 Star Central Otago Pinot Noir. This quality of Pinot Noir at this price has been unheard until now. Bramble, spice, doris plum and rich ripe red fruit aromatics. A delicious fruit driven style having a rounded palate of cherry flavours with a hint of chocolate and spice. Followed by a mineral, elegant palate showing great density, tension and persistence. Ideal on its own or matched with lamb or strong flavoured fish.
