Benromach (Scotland) 100 proof 10yr

Nose: this only confirms how good this spirit is, whatever the strength. This combination of baked apple, plum jam, vanilla, furniture polish and toasted wood is simply delicious. Maybe there’s a tad more prune / red berry aroma than in the standard edition, a tad more sherry if you like. Is that kiwi in the background? Anyway the old-school dusty / earthy notes, mint and leather are still present. Mouth: fairly dry, quite spicy and even more old-school. Library dust, pepper, light earthy peat smoke, hints of cough syrup and linseed oil. Becomes rounder as it shows hints of chocolate bars with banana filling and toffee. Finish: long, still smoky with echoes of sherry and chocolate.

Caol Ila 25yo 700ml

Caol Ila 25 year old is the oldest of the standard Caol Ila family. Like the rest of the standard lineup, it has been bottled at 43%, however it follows several cask-strength editions which were also aged for 25 years. A small amount of ex-sherry, European oak casks were used for maturation.

A quarter century in the cask has transformed peaty smoke on the nose to polish, putty, and  lighter notes of salt and fruit. The palate showcases a spicy, dry oak profile, but the influence of sherry is felt as well, with honey and nuttiness, and touches of vanilla and toffee. Overall the smoke is much softer here, with wood playing a larger role. Long, pleasant finish. Complex , divine

Glen Scotia (Scotland) 15yr Single Malt

Campbeltown Homerun

Released as part of the brand's relaunch in 2015, Glen Scotia 15 Year Old is matured in bourbon barrels.

Nose: Broad and medium-weight with citrus peels, ginger snap biscuits. Sweet and with great depth. Apricot aromas develop then drift towards fruit salad. After a short time the wood come to the fore and water helps to release baked fruit.

Palate: A complicated palate where the initial nose would lead you to expect plump fruits, what you get is a surprisingly dry element. The palate fleshes out as the first impact of the nose fades. Adding water brings out the caramelised elements balanced with the wood elements expected of a 15 year old.

Finish: Firm and slightly dry.
