Radburnd Cellars (Hawkes Bay) 2018 Merlot Cabernet

16points - JancisRobinson.com
“Released October 2020. 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kate Radburnd has 35 vintages under her belt and until now has made wine for other people, mainly at Pask.
Here she launches her own label. These grapes were hand-picked from free-draining sites. Aged for 21 months in a mix of French barriques. TA 5.8 g/l. Appetising, gently- textured wine that's far from a blockbuster but has good integrity. Lifted, leafy nose and some sweetness on palate entry but nothing heavy or exaggerated. I'm tasting this, as instructed, at room temperature but I think it could take a little cooling too. Light to medium body. Quite sophisticated. When to drink 2020 – 2026”

Powerful, restrained and elegant, this blend exhibits lifted aromatics and berry fruits, revealing layers of complexity that will slowly unfold. Highly structured with balanced acidity and tannin, this wine will continue to evolve for the next decade.

Batches of hand harvested fruit was chilled overnight before processing the following day. Chilled bunches were hand sorted and de-stemmed, and whole berries were transferred to open fermenters with some foot stomping. Whole bunches were also incorporated in some of the Merlot fermenters. The berries were cold soaked before fermentation, with pumping over twice per day then pressed to barriques at the end of fermentation. The Merlot and Cabernet matured for 21 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Blended in December 2019 and bottled in January
2020, the final blend is approximately 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

An elegant Merlot Cabernet blend which exhibits lifted aromatics of fragrant berry fruits, sweet French oak, and underlying lavender and thyme. Complex and textural, seamless tannins harmoniously support red and black fruits, earthiness, and spice. Tautly poised to develop beautifully with bottle age.

"The refined, youthful 2019 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the Bridge Pa Triangle and at Roys Hill, and matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (partly new). Full-coloured, it is a very age-worthy red, fresh, flowing and supple, with concentrated, vigorous, plum/spice flavours, oak complexity, and a seductively smooth texture. Best drinking 2024+.”

96 points – outstanding - Cam Douglas – www.camdouglasms.com
“Complex and layered bouquet with scents of red and purple skinned fruits, a distinctive layer of French oak and Hawkes Bay crushed stones minerality. Youthful, primary and alluring. Fantastic structure on the palate with an abundance of ripe chalky tannins and backbone of acidity. This foundation embraces the flavours of dark red berries and spices, barrel flavours, some wild violets and soft savoury complexity. Excellent mouthfeel and finish, complexity and charm. Don’t rush to drink this wine - its one for the cellar with best drinking from 2023 through 2030+”

A dark brooding Syrah with pure floral fragrance, elegant, graceful and restrained. Hallmark silky texture, persistence of flavour and lingering length abound, very ageworthy. Hawkes Bay’s 2019 growing season started with a wet spring, resulting in lower yields and smaller berry size. A warm and dry period after Christmas, extending to a long hot autumn with cool nights ensured fresh acidity and the harvested grapes displayed wonderful intense fruit flavour. Higher growing temperatures and lower rainfall, coupled with a lighter crop
resulted in an early start to vintage.

The hand harvested Syrah was chilled overnight before processing the following day. Chilled bunches were hand sorted, then de-stemmed and the whole berries were transferred to open fermenters with some foot stomping. Some whole bunches were incorporated in the ferments. The berries were cold soaked before fermentation, indigenous yeast initiated the fermentation, while cultured yeast completed it. Twice daily pump overs and cool ferment temperatures through to dryness, then pressed to barriques. The Syrah matured for approximately 16 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Blended in September 2020 and bottled in October 2020.
